This afternoon we led a training course in LGBT awareness for officers from the Derbyshire Constabulary, creating a greater awareness of our LGBT+ communities. We will be training a total of 20 officers in LGBT+ issues, who plan on visiting our centre once a month to engage with the LGBT+ communities in Derbyshire.
Topics covered included LGBT+ awareness of gender identity and sexual orientation, allowing someone to self-define their own identity rather than defining it for them. We held a discussion on hate crime, and raised awareness of long-term LGBT+ hate crime that consists of multiple minor incidents. We also discussed why people from the LGBT+ communities who are the victims of hate crime often don’t report it to the police.
If you see these lovely folks out and about, give them a wave! (We can see you hiding behind the Bi flag PC Luke Scribbens!) We will be training more officers with LGBT+ awareness in the near future.
