On Tuesday 28th February 2012, Derbyshire Friend hosted its 2nd Annual Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Conference at the University of Derby’s Enterprise Centre.
This year’s conference, titled ‘Creating Safer Futures’, was focussed on raising awareness of Hate Crime, Domestic Abuse & Sexual Exploitation and featured a number of local and national speakers who delivered a series of engaging and informative workshops. The event was very well attended and we received a great deal of very positive feedback (particularly about the hospitality provided by the Enterprise Centre. It truly was a fantastic lunch buffet!)
Scroll down to see our exclusive photospread of the day’s events. And let us take this opportunity to thank everybody involved in delivering this fantastic event – particularly Dr. Catherine Donovan (University of Sunderland), Rita Hirani (Broken Rainbow), Phil Mitchell (The BLAST Project), Nicola Dalby (Safe & Sound Derby), Mandy MacDonald (Child Protection Manager), Peter Kelley (GALOP London) and all of our trusty volunteers who helped out on the day.
Before the delegates descend upon us, Andy Cave and Julie Mehigan prepare for the welcome speech.

Peter Kelley of GALOP London delivers his engaging workshop and encourages the delegates to think about Homophobic and Transphobic Hate Crime and the potential barriers to reporting.
Meanwhile, Rita Hirani of Broken Rainbow delivers her excellent workshop on Same Sex Domestic Abuse to a room of rapt delegates!
Mandy MacDonald talks to the delegates about the sexual exploitation of young people and explains her role as Child Protection Manager.
The panel of the Sexual Exploitation Workshop (Phil Mitchell, Nicola Dalby & Mandy MacDonald) begin their session with a presentation from The BLAST Project.
As Peter Kelley of GALOP London continues his workshop, Travis runs our new-fangled live Twitter feed of the day’s events and developments!
It wasn’t just the delegates that learned new things on the day! As Mandy MacDonald delivers her talk on Sexual Exploitation, our CEO, Andy Cave, studiously makes notes!
See! We told you it was fabulous! The lucky delegates at the front of the queue for the mouthwatering buffet!
Towards the end of the day, delegates are asked to reflect on what they have learned throughout the day and to consider what changes they can start to implement within their organisations.
With all the delegates gone home, a tired but happy DF team pack up their things and head back to the office with Julie pushing the trolley!
