LGB-QWERTY in association with Derbyshire LGBT+ Presents ‘Looking Back, Looking Forward’.
Commemorating 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, ’Looking Back, Looking Forward’ is a series of spoken word events taking place throughout the year in venues across Derby. We are looking for 18 poets and spoken word artists to produce new pieces of work on the themes of looking back, looking at life now, and to what LGBT+ life might be like in 50 years time to be showcased at three special events throughout 2017.
Each event will showcase the inaugural readings of commissioned work and also have open mic slots available for those who want to read their own work. The first of these events is themed to look at experiences of LGBT+ life pre 1967. The second in July looks at life now, and the last looks forward to imagine what LGBT+ life might be like in 50 years time.
LGBT+ and spoken word have always had a strong relationship, from protest chants to impassioned speeches, poetry and prose exploring personal expression and identity, spoken word has allowed LGBT+ people to express themselves, recognise themselves in another’s words, or know that they have support from those who understand.
If you would be interested in getting involved or submitting work please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or if you would like to learn more about the project, please join us at on our launch night at ‘LGB-QWERTY #5’ on Friday 24th February at Derby Museum, as part of Derby Museum’s LGBT History Month series of events.
‘Looking Back, Looking Forward’, is presented by LGB-QWERTY in association with Derbyshire LGBT+, supported by Furthest From The Sea CIC, Twisted Tongues and Derby Live.
