“Kings, Princesses, Ducks and Penguins” is a resource for Early Years settings and primary schools written by teacher and ex-Deputy Head, John Yates-Harold.
John has more than 28 years’ experience teaching in schools and training school staff. As a Deputy Head, John was part of “No Outsiders” which was a 28-month project using age-appropriate picture books to challenge homophobia.
As part of this project, and following on from John’s work with Stonewall, he wrote lesson activities to accompany the books used in school. These activities have now been collected together, updated and expanded and published as “Kings, Princesses, Ducks and Penguins.”
The resource is practical, easy-to-use and fun. It contains lesson activities for 30 picture books and short novels to enable schools to teach about different families and to effectively and appropriately challenge homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying.
The resource also contains everything a school needs to embed this work as part of PSHE, English and SMSC. Apart from the activities, the resource contains a list of the book themes; suggested age groups for each book; an extensive book list; a “Best Practice” guide; and FAQs. There is also an opportunity for schools to purchase a set of 7 books at a discounted price so that they can get started as quickly as possible!
Along with the resource comes a memory stick containing extra resources which accompany the activities.
Schools that purchase the resource also get:
- Training from Derbyshire LGBT+ at a reduced rate
- A follow-up visit, at a reduced rate, from Derbyshire LGBT+ 6 months after training
- Further lesson activities as they are written
- 3 opportunities for email or telephone support
