Family group

Alongside other one-off events for LGBT+ families, we run monthly, themed family sessions in Derby on the last Sunday of every month.

Our next session is happening on Sunday, 28th March, 10am-12pm at our Derby Community Centre (25 Curzon Street, Derby, DE1 1L).

Our theme for this session will be Green Earth!

At each Family Group, we simply connect over a drink and conversation. There are plenty of optional activities for all ages to get involved in which are related to the theme of the month - follow our socials for more information.

Our groups are an informal and safe space for LGBT+ family of any shape, size and make up.

Maybe you’re new to the area and want to meet other LGBT+ families? Perhaps you are an LGBT+ parent and want to connect with others on the same journey? Maybe your sibling is LGBT+ and you want to learn more about how to support them? You could be considering fostering or adoption? Any LGBT+ people and their partners, relatives or friends are welcome to join the family group session.

The groups are led by qualified, experienced LGBT+ staff that are DBS checked, and paediatric First Aid trained with active safeguarding procedures to protect attendees. You can meet our Families Worker who is hosting the session on our team page here.

Booking is required - to let us know you’re coming click the button below to email us or give us a ring on 01332 207 704.

Useful information

  • Once you ring the doorbell, one of our team will welcome you in, sign you into the building and show you the space we’re in. The room has cushy seating around edges for conversations, in the middle there will be tables with activities, and a quiet corner for a breather. The windows of the space are blacked out with outdoor window graphics so we are out of the passer-by’s view. If you’re new to our organisation, we’ll also ask you to complete a form telling us a little bit about yourself.

  • By foot, from Derby bus station it is a 13 min walk to find us. From Derby train station, it is a 31 minute walk.

By bus, the closest bus stop in a 1 min walk away called Wardwick serving buses 239, Swift, The Mickleover, The Villager and V3.

By car, the closest parking is Friargate Lodge which costs £2.50 for a day. You can find it on the map here.

By bike, you’re welcome to take your bike into the space with you and rest it on the side. There are also plenty of bike parking stands throughout the city.

  • You are more than welcome to bring your own materials/projects you are working on or a book you’re reading into the space. Do be aware of bringing anything into the space that could be dangerous to others, could stain or be too delicate for others to be around. Otherwise, come as you are.

  • We’ll have tea, coffee and snacks on the go.

  • There is a step access to the space as you come in through the main door, with a ramp we put out for those who’d like it. The corridor itself is smooth and has a slight incline. Through a side entrance is a space we’ll be in. There is an accessible toilet in the space.

  • Yes, we will be inside (in a warm heated room). We hope that you can join us whatever the weather as long as it is safe for you to travel.

  • You are very welcome to bring someone who is an LGBT+ ally with you who you consider family. Alternatively, get in touch with us - we can say hello before the day so there is a familiar face in the space. Our Community Café drop in is open every Wednesday at the same space between 11am and 3pm if you’d like to trial the travel, see the space and meet us before the Family Group.

  • Email soniat@derbyshirelgbt.org.uk, give us a ring on 01332 207 704 or send us a DM through social media. You can also note any questions as you're booking your space.
