Free Lesson Plans and Activities for LGBT+ History Month 2026

John Yates-Harold taught for 28 years in primary schools across London before relocating to Derbyshire in 2016. As Deputy Head Teacher at The Jenny Hammond Primary School in Leytonstone, East London, he was among 16 educators to take part in the ‘No Outsiders Project’. This 28-month action-research project sought to challenge homophobia through age-appropriate picture books and short novels. John wrote sets of lesson activities to accompany these books. On moving up to Derbyshire, John began working with the team at Derbyshire LGBT+ and his lesson activities were collected and published in a manual for schools called “Kings, Princesses, Ducks and Penguins”. This manual is about to enter its 4th edition and will soon be available on a memory stick to purchase from Derbyshire LGBT+.
